Mulhako brings forward celebrations, Oct 23rd

One of Malawi's leading cultural groups, Mulhako Wa Alhomwe has changed the date of this year's annual festival celebration, from the 25th to 23rd October, 2011, Nyasa Times can reveal.

The organization, had initially announced that the celebrations will take place on Tuesday, the 25th of October.

However, after an afterthought, the organization has decided to bring the date forward and have the festival on a Sunday, the 23rd.

Chairperson of the Entertainment Committee of the Main Organizing Committee, Rev. Harold Mbedza said that a lot of people are interested to come and attend the occasion, however, the earlier announced date of Tuesday was problematic as many would have been engaged at work.

"As a listening organization, Mulhako Wa Alhomwe decided to change the date to Sunday the 23rd so that many people are able to attend," he said.

Rev. Mbedza said that the main activities of the festival will start on Saturday the 22nd of October where all Lhomwe traditional dances will line up at the organization's headquarters , Chonde in Mulanje for a traditional dance competition.

"Groups have been gathered from all corners of Malawi where Lhomwes are scattered and they will battle it out in the competition on Saturday," said Mbedza, adding, a group of cultural experts have been selected as judges for the competition.

Sources within Mulhako Wa Alhomwe say that winners of the competition on Saturday, are expected to be awarded on the main day of the celebrations by President Bingu Wa Mutharika.

Mutharika, is Founder and Patron of the cultural heritage group, Mulhako Wa Alhomwe.
This year's event will be a fourth annual festival celebration for Lhomwes following the formation of the grouping by President Mutharika in 2008.
