Well, dear diarist, I agree that sometimes it is comfortable to start with an outline, but I have just totally abandoned the outline I made for a non-fiction thing. Totally rewriting some of the content, too, this time trying to just make it flow – even though it is non-fiction, I think it works best if people can follow threads (which my outline had not given them).

So I can see the value in ‘winging it’ – but I think that I have to have some sort of structure or goal in my head, maybe in my subconscious.

Sometimes it is a rhythm of a pattern of words that gets me started, rather than an actual title.

And sometimes it is actually the ending. I know what the resolution is before I know how to start or who the characters are.

But I still have trouble with endings – whether I know what they will be or not.
