MBC workers get letters of redeployment, dismissal

Employees at the state owned Malawi Broadcasting Corporation have this week started receiving letters of either redeployment or end of their work at the institution.

New letters of appointment indicating a harmonised salary for employees of both radio and TV were handed out and indicate that the new structure has demoted most employees.

The Post of Deputy Station Manager has been scrapped off and salaries according to management have been structured in accordance with academic qualifications meaning some are sharing the same grade but different salaries.

Only 413 of 700 employees are retained at MBC Radio and TV and the most of the remainder have been retired with full packages.

Some have been redeployed to the government ministries and departments which include Ministry of Information, Education, and department of the Auditor General.

The employees are reduced to junior positions with their salaries slashed drastically. Some will be receiving monthly salaries of K25 000 from K50 000.

Some employees have told Nyasa Times that they will not take the new responsibilities because they have university degrees and cannot be reduced to junior positions in government.

TV employees were given letters on Tuesday and fingers for those at the radio were still crossed as they waited for their fate.

Over 20 employees refused to be associated with the merger and asked for retirement.

Felix Washoni has been redeployed to the Ministry of Information Film Department.

Thomas Chafunya, who was business editor has been redeployed to National Audit Office while sports journalist Kevin Moyo has been redeployed to the Ministry of Information Film Department but since challenged the move.

MBC established under a Parliamentary Act was previously operating as radio 1 and radio 2 before merging with Malawi Television in July last year and adopted the name MBC for both services.

Chimwemwe Banda,MBC Transitional Committee chairperson, who is also MBC Director of Current Affairs and Programmes said with the rebranding, Banda said the acronym MBC will only refer to the television services while the radio services rebranded to Radio one and Radio 2FM.
