Aford convention slated for November

Alliance for Democracy (Aford) will hold a national convention to elect new leaders in the month of November.

This was disclosed by Aford national chairman Enock Chihana MP during Straight Talk interview on Capital Radio.

"In Aford every five years we have a convention and our mandate has expired," said Chihana.

"We need to go back to the people, the owners of the party to elect us," said the newly elected MP.

Chihana said the convention would be held next month or November.

Vice President Tennyson Banda also confirmed the party would be electing new office bearers at the convention. But party president Dindi Gowa Nyasulu was not immediately available for comment on the matter,

Chihana also touted that the once strong party in the northern region has now resurrected and will claim its ground in their former back yard.

"Aford is back!" he declared.

On how he managed to win the by-elections, Chihana, who is also national chairman of Aford, said: "I played top-flight politics. It was very good campaigning."

"If we can have elections in the north today, all seats will be taken by Aford. Aford is very strong in the north and we want to expand it in the central region and the south," he said.

Asked if Aford was a regional party, he said every party is supposed to have a political base.

"The Democratic Party [in US] is strong in areas like New York. It does not mean that Democratic Party in America is a New York Party," he said.

On the claims by newly former People's Development Movement (PDM) that its stronghold is northern region, Chihana dismissed the party as a mere "club".

"PDM is just a club. It has been tested and failed," he said.

He also said Livingstonia Synod of the CCAP erred by supporting PDM in the Rumphi central by-elections claiming the church has recognised its mistake and will rally behind Aford.
