The spiritual leader of the world’s 77 million Anglicans, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams will visit Malawi next month, Lamberth Palace the official London residence of the Archbishop confirmed.

The archbishop will also visit Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Marie Papworth, media director at Lambeth Palace in London said the Head of Anglican church has been invited to Malawi to celebrate 150th anniversary of the creation of the province of Central Africa.

The Anglican Church on May 1  celebrated 150 years of its existence in Malawi at a ceremony held at All Saints Cathedral of Lake Malawi Diocese in Nkhotakota.

The church was also celebrating 150 years since Bishop Charles Mackenzie visited Malawi.

Williams visit to Malawi comes at a time when the country’s relationship with her long-time development partners UK has soured and he will be the first prominent British representative to visit Malawi since the diplomatic spat.

But the Archbishop’s spokeswoman insisted the trip is pastoral, not political visit.

She said: ”The aim of the trip as a whole is a pastoral visit and it’s to show solidarity with Anglicans there, that’s really the aim of the trip.”

But Lambeth Palace has requested a meeting for Archbishop with President Robert Mugabe when he travels to Harare.
