Atupele hits at Ntaba over ‘cheap propaganda’
Presidential spokesperson Hetherwick Ntaba is on a propaganda to discredit opposition leaders by claiming that they are sponsoring the September 21 anti government vigils, according to Machinga North East MP Atupele Muluzi.
Muluzi has since distanced himself from Ntaba's claims describing it as a ploy to make the opposition leaders responsible for any damages during the vigils.
Ntaba told a news conference in Lilongwe on Wednesday that opposition leader in parliament John Tembo, Vice President Joyce Banda and UDF legislator who harbours ambitions to contest in 2014 presidential elections have contributed K1 million each to support the civil society organisations in the organization of the vigils.
He challenged the media that ruling DPP has emails that show communication between the opposition leaders and CSOs.
Ntaba blamed the media for not highlighting the plot which he said DPP has overwhelming evidence according to the emails.
But the young Muluzi said he has no knowledge of what Ntaba is claiming. He said emails can be created by anybody and claim to be what he is not.
"I have never given any money to civil society organisations. For what? I know this is cheap propaganda advanced by Ntaba," said Muluzi.
" By mentioning our names, they are using it to make us responsible for the damages that will be done during the demonstrations, this is bad. Anybody can create an email and write anything," said Muluzi.
Meanwhile, opposition leader John Tembo has also distanced himself from the claims by DPP.
" Thats a lie. We have not funded civil society at least my party, Malawi Congress Party, we have not funded the civil society," said Tembo.
Meanwhile, some journalists who attended the press conference addressed by Ntaba said they could not use DPP's evidence as truth for the story he was telling them.
"We suspect cheap propaganda by the DPP. As media we cannot just rush to use such kind of sensitive information without proving for ourselves that indeed these people are sponsoring the vigils," one journalist said.
The emails have been circulating and Nyasa Times exposed the same and noted that it did not verify its authenticity.
The vigils are coming on September 21. CSOs have pulled out of the negotiations with government because they say the president is not committed.
