State vice president Joyce Banda says she will not be cowed into blind submission by the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and its leadership but will keep on pointing out their wrongs and ills that impact negatively on the people's livelihood, saying she does not fear arrest.

Speaking to a record huge gathering that came to witness the official Eastern Region launch of her newly-registered People's Party (PP) at Mangochi old airport ground, the first woman vice president in Malawi said she has a duty to uphold and protect the Republican Constitution as per the commitment she made when she was sworn in as vice president in May 2009.

"The constitution is very clear on the rights and freedoms that the citizens ought to enjoy; the constitution confers upon the government a duty to ensure that citizens have access to all life essentials such as education, food, medication, basic birthrights and freedoms among others. Should I sit back with and enjoy tea at my official Mudi Residence with my husband when people are denied all these essential requirements?

"No, I will continue to stand up and raise my voice on behalf of the people that employed me to serve them as keeping quiet would be abdicating from my constitutional obligation,"  Banda said, attracting a deafening applause.

She cited a development where she had received a call recently from a pupil teacher who claimed to have been calling from Malomo in Ntchisi district, complaining that he had gone four months without a salary.

"This man said, Madam vice president, I've gone four months without pay; can you please assist me. Now, in such a scenario, should I keep quiet? No,  I will speak out against such social and economic ills and if you wish to arrest me, do so, but just know you are not only arresting me but all the people that are here with me today and all Malawians that cherish democratic values," the VP said, attracting more applause.
