Indebank, one of Malawi's commercial banks, says it has embarked on a project to install an in-house auto teller machine (ATM) switch which will result in the bank providing its ATM service to customers other than relying o rival banks.

According to Indebank marketing manager Chimwemwe Khonje, the switch is expected to be fully operational by mid-December 2011.

“The decision to install an in-house switch was necessitated by the continued growth of the bank's customer base," Khonje said.

"The acquisition of the switch is also in line with Indebank's expansion strategy that has seen the bank opening new branches and agencies across the country, upgrading its core banking system and introducing an internet banking delivery channel," he added.

Indebank customers will be required to hand in their current ATM cards in exchange for new ones after the switch.

Khonje said "The switch will, therefore, allow the bank to integrate its information technology infrastructure and in so doing enable the bank to improve its customer service delivery."

Indebank assured its customers that the bank will minimise ATM service disruptions to customers during the course of the project.

"Communication notifying customers as to when the card exchange will be conducted will be sent out in due course," the bank said.
