Japan musician Eto on Malawi Lake of Stars line-up

Malawi’s Lake of Stars has become one of the best international music festivals and this year’s edition – Sept. 30 to Oct.2nd -promises nothing but fun with the latest inclusion of  Japanese  musician and drummer, Leonard Eto.

In a statement, Japanese embassy Cultural Affairs Secretary, Yuki Asano confirmed that the talented drummer will perform at Lake of Stars.

” Leonard Eto will first play at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe for free on first October and will the following day perform at Lake of Stars,” says Asano in the statement.

The statement says Eto is an influential drummer and has had his original works featured in Hollywood films like JFK, The Lion King, and The Hunted among others.

Eto: Japanese drummer to perform at Malawi 2011 edition of Lake of Stars

Eto, according to the statement grew up in a music family.

“His father, Kimio Eto, is the founder of the Ikuta Eto school of Koto playing and performed with eminent people such as Leopold Stokowski and Harry Belafonte. His eldest brother is a recording director and the elder is a percussionist, Steve Eto,” reads the statement.

He was born in New York and joined the Japanese Taiko drum in 1984 but quit the group in 1992 to pursue  a solo career.

In 2004 he made headlines when he toured the US and UK for concerts.

Lake of Stars festival has run since 2004 on the shores of Lake Malawi with the intention of raising Malawi's profile as a tourism destination.

Founder, Will Jameson, describes the 2011 line-up as “justly global, truly Malawian, showcasing a diverse mix of traditional and new African music, art, poetry, fashion, markets, food and more”.
Jameson  said there will also be "a good range of poetry, theatre groups and an amazing performance from a Malawi martial arts school."
