Girls' enrolment at some schools in Karonga district has drastically improved following the intervention of mother groups, Nyasa Times has learnt.

Mother groups look after the welfare of girls and usually make follow ups on those girls that absent themselves from school for no apparent reasons and also find possible solutions.

Nyasa Timeslearnt of this development during a media tour jointly organised by the Media Council of Malawi (MCM), United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) and the Voluntary Service Overseas.

Chindime: UNICEF working with different stakeholders

Although no statistics were readily available, testimonies from officials and mother groups attest to this fact.

Mother Groups have helped to improve girls' education at Hangalawe and Sangiro in Karonga through home visits to girls who dropped out of school due to a number of unknown reasons.

UNICEF Girls Education Officer Clara Chindime said they work in partnership with different stakeholders in order to improve girls' education in the country.

Chindime said they want to ensure that schools in the district are child friendly and accessible to both girls and boys.

She noted that many girls drop out of school at primary level, with a few going to secondary school level and one or two reaching tertiary level.

Hangalawe Mother Group Secretary Ezelina Gondwe said they decided to counsel girls on the importance of education and the prevention of HIV and early pregnancies.

Gondwe said they have managed to bring back to school six pupils that were married but later divorced and some orphans who dropped out of school due to a number of reasons.
