Kinnah dismisses Malawi’s FIFA rankings

Malawi national team coach Kinnah Phiri says he is not reading too much into the team’s drop on the latest ranking released on Wednesday by football’s world governing body FIFA.

The Flames – as Malawi team is fondly called – have dropped five places to 78.

“People should not worry about the rankings, our focus now should be on the Africa Cup of Nations last qualifying game against Chad next month," Kinnah told reporters.

Kinnah says it is unfortunate though that after the goalless draw against Tunisia, Malawi have still failed to rise looking at the fact that the North Africans are ahead of Malawi.

“Of course we didn’t play any friendly apart from that game but I thought we would improve on the chart but we will continue working hard and I know one day we will break into the 50 to 60 bracket on the rankings, "he added.

The team is expected to go into camp this coming Sunday to prepare for the Chad game and a friendly against Ethiopia enroute to Chad next month.

“The will go into serious training this weekend and FAM has confirmed our friendly with Ethiopia, so everything is ok” Kinnah confirmed.

Malawi only needs to win with any margin in their October 8 must-win in Chad to seal their back-to-back Nations Cup qualification.
