The National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) have added its voice to demand justice on the mysterious death of Robert Chasowa, a University of Malawi student political activist.

Police ruled hastily that Chasowa's death was "suicide" but that has been challenged by his family, students and medical experts. There is widespread belief that he was murdered by regime thugs for his anti-government activities.

"Chasowa's death leaves a lot of questions than answers, thus the need for authorities to come out clear on this issue," NOAM said in a media statement signed by its president Abraham Gama.

The nurses organisation called for an independent commission of inquiry on the death, saying justice must been done to Chasowa.

"His death comes at a time when reports are rife that Police [had] been looking for the deceased to answer charges of circulating seditious publications," said the statement.

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) says it would investigate thoroughly Chasowa's death.

Chasowa, 25,  was found dead in a pool of blood last Saturday within the campus of Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi, where he was a fourth year mechanical engineering student.
