Malawi parliament meets Nov 11, new committee heads expected

The 192 Malawian members of parliament, who include 16 women, will resume their deliberations on November 1, it has been announced.

Despite government bills, there will also be swearing in of newly elected legislator, Enock Chihana of Aford, who emerged victor during the recent by-election in Rumphi central constituency.

According to the office of the Clerk of Parliament, any MP is required by law to take both oaths of office and oath of allegiance before starting work in accordance with Section 52 of the Malawi Constitution.

Nyasa Timesalso understands that there will be changes in the Parliamentary Committees as most of its chairperson has been appointed cabinet minister.

Enock Chihana: To be sworn in

The committees will have to elect new chairpersons.

Chairperson of Malawi Women Parliamentary Caucus, Jean Kalirani, was appointed minister of health.

Goodall Gondwe who was recently elected chair of Legal Affairs Committee has been appointed also in the cabinet.

Also joining cabinet was Henry Mussa who was chairman of parliamentary Public Accounts Committee.

Kondwani Nankhumwa who Chairperson of the Parliamentary Media and Communication Committee is now deputy minister of foreign affairs.

The other committee to elect new chair will be the budget and finance, as Ralph Jooma is now deputy minister of health.
