Suspected regime thugs on Sunday night attacked a leading human rights activist Peter Chinoko of the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) at his at his Lilongwe home.

Chinoko's attack was alerted on social networking site Facebook by social activist Isaac Cheke Ziba and human rights lawyer Wapona Kitta.

News is that another civil society leader is being attacked in Lilongwe,"alerted Ziba.

Chinoko: Attacked

He told Nyasa Times when contacted after the alert that the thugs were attacking Chinoko at his house.

Kita posted: "Peter Chinoko of CCJP LL being attacked at his home by over 20 thugs now. SOS pls!"

The lawyer updated later “Am told after failing to break into Peter Chinoko’s house, they went to the next by neighbour, Mike Kakatera another human rights activist, who has been heavily wounded…! Thanks to all guys who took heed of my FB update, it appears the neighbourhood was alerted by it and they got them dispersed. Police are at the scene now!”

Chinoko has been one of the vocal human rights activists and critic of the Mutharika regime.

He was instrumental in organising the protests to force President Bingu wa Mutharika to address political and economic ills besetting Malawi.

Malawi is currently facing crackdown of anti government critics  which has  seen two petro-bombing incidents at the offices of rights activist Rafiq Hajat and the houses of priest and rights campaigner MacDonald  Sembereka including  Salim Bagus a member of the opposition People's Party.

Opposition members have also been physically attacked while the mysterious death 25-yar-old Robert Chasowa a University of Malawi student who has been a regime critic has been linked to the terror crusade.
