The soccer fraternity has received with excitement news that the Football Association of Malawi (FAM)  is working on a possibility of the Flames playing a strength testing match against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana as part of the team’s preparations for  their October 8 Africa Cup of Nations' must-win in Chad.

A meeting between FAM and the Flames technical panel over the weekend took on board coach Kinnah Phiri’s proposal of camping in the rainbow nation so that the team prepares adequately for the Chad game.

It agreed that the friendly game should be played in South Africa on September 28 depending on the South Africa Football Association (SAFA) response to their request.

It also came out from that meeting that they will be looking at the possibility of playing against Ethiopia or Sudan enroute to Chad incase the South Africa deal flops.

Just as Kinnah was excited that his proposal is being looked at favourably, there is also a buzz of excitement among soccer fans that the Flames might play a friendly before the defining encounter against Chad.

“It is a must win game for us and we need thorough preparations and am happy that FAM is working on that friendly. We don’t want a repeat of what happened in the cancelled Mozambique friendly,” Watson Changadeya told Nyasa Times.

“Failure to prepare is preparing to fail so FAM should do whatever it takes to make this friendly work out. South African football is on the rise and we can benefit from that friendly as we tune up for the Chad game,” Yusuf Yasin chipped in.

John Kumwenda Jnr asked government and the corporate world to come in and support FAM so that the Flames play against Bafana Bafana.

“This is the right time for all stakeholders to support the flames as they aim for back to back Afcon qualification, we want to prepare adequately,” he said.

Malawi only needs to win with any margin to seal their back-to-back Nations Cup qualification.
