Newly appointed minister of Youth Development and Welfare, Symon Vuwa Kaunda, has outlined some of his areas of concentration in sports as he takes over from Dr Lucius Kanyumba who has been moved to the ministry of labour.

Kaunda was appointed minister in a new cabinet that was announced on Wednesday when the sports fraternity was stunned with the omission of sports because the ministry is “ministry of youth development and welfare”.

Nyasa Times sought clarification from Office of President and Cabinet and they said sports is now under this new ministry.

Kaunda, who is back in sports after being moved from the ministry of information, told reporters that his immediate concern will be making sure that the national football team, the Flames, qualify for the African Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea in 2012.

Vuwa: Outline priorities

“The Flames are on the verge of back to back qualification for Africa Cup of Nations and I will make sure that resources are available so that the team prepares well for the last qualifying game against Chad,” he said.

Another area that the new minister wants to see change is the area of club sponsorship.

“It's unfortunate that big teams in the Super League are playing without sponsorship which is really affecting the standards of our game. I will work with a lot of stakeholders on how best our teams can be helped,” he added.

Some of the big teams that are without sponsorship are Bullets FC, Mighty Wanderers, Escom, and Blantyre United.

“I will outline some of my priorities later but am grateful to the President for giving me such a challenge and trusting in my abilities,” he told a local radio station.

Kaunda was very instrumental in drumming up support for the Flames as they qualified for the 2010 Afcon in Angola when he was minister of sports.
