Namibia wants Malawi Queens match ahead of Australia tests
Malawi Queens is expected to go into camp next week in readiness of next month's four-nation invitational tournament in Australia and Namibia says they want a strength testing match.
The Holden Test Series, which is scheduled to take place from October 18, will involve top class teams like the hosts Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.
According to Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) president Rose Chinunda, government has released K5 million to the Queens.
The organisers have pledged to foot return air tickets and accommodation to the participating teams.
Chinunda said that with such as amount they will be able to assemble the squad.
“We are thankful to government for the timely rescue. This money will help us for accommodation and allowances for our players,” said Chinunda.
This is a morale booster for the Queens as their full squad is available since Australian based Mwayi ‘Professor’ Kumwenda is in the country on off-season.
Some of the players who are expected to be called for camp are Caroline Ayuda Ngwira, Towera Vinkhumbo, Beatrice Kadango, Bridget Kumwenda, Grace Mwafulirwa, Sindi Simutowe, and Enelesi Chibokho.
The Queens have not been active since their last tournament in July, where they took part in the Sixth World Netball Championship.
Meanwhile, the All Namibia Netball Association wants an international friendly match with Malawi Queens.
"We are still in discussions with Malawi because they are planning to go and take part in a tournament in Australia so if we can play we might have to play in Windhoek," said the vice president – marketing and public relations of ANNA, Alvira Peterson.
The Namibia association also want to invite Botswana so that they can hold e a tri-nations type of tournament and get international referees.
They want the matches to count for the rankings.
"Botswana and Malawi are the ideal countries to play because they are both ranked higher than us and both recently played in the World Championships so they will be able to teach us something."
Malawi is ranked sixth in the world while Botswana is ranked 16th.
