Newly elected Rumphi central lawmaker, Enock Chihana, has said time had come for the youth to take over power in Malawi.

Chihana, son of pro-democracy campaigner  late Chakufwa Tom Chihana,  said Malawi needs leadership renewal, saying change is an imperative the old political guards  has to embrace or face extinction.

"Malawians we have to advocate for change and young leadership,"  Chihana, who won the highly contested parliamentary by-election in the Rumphi central constituency in the northern Malawi on Alliance for Democracy (Aford) ticket, said.

Chihana: Time for the youth to take over

" People of 70, 80 years  have expired. We need young people to come in and bring fresh ideas," Chihana said on Capital Radio's Straight Talk interview aired on Thursday.

"There so many young people both in opposition and ruling party," he pointed out.

Chihana also ripped off President Bingu wa Mutharika, accusing him of being obstinate and autocratic.

"This  man run this country as a personal estate that's why he has failed," he said.

"He is the president, he wants to be the judge, he wants to be parliament, he wants to be everything," said Chihana.

The lawmaker said when he goes to parliament, he will persuade his fellow legislators across the board to repeal repressive laws enacted by the Mutharika administration and give democracy real life.
