State vice president Joyce Banda has said her People's Party has so far over 1.2 million members nationwide and would go all the way to form the next government in 2014.

She said the party registered members across the country and said if anyone doubted her, records are there for verification.

The party was registered on July 29 by government after a protracted legal battle in which other parties claimed the words 'People’s Party' where from their parties and that this would bring confusion to the electorate.

Speaking at the official Eastern Region launch of People's Party at Mangochi old airport ground on Sunday, Banda said the party was founded on three cornerstones of "unity, equity and development."

Banda said without unity, there would be no meaningful social, political and economic development; and that without equity where the national cake is equally distributed among the citizens, there would be no peace and tranquillity in Malawi.

She reiterated that the PP "is a party for the people" as demonstrated in the manner the "people" stood solidly behind it when the authorities were reluctant to give it a certification of registration.

Banda recalled that even in the light of a court order for the registrar of political parties to register PP, the latter continue to employ delaying tactics but the "people" said they had enough of it and threatened to take unspecified action against the authorities.

"I said, 'where are you'? They replied we're still at the registrar's office and we won't move an inch until we get the certificate of registration," said Banda, recalling further that she had advised them to "leave the premises as the police were trigger-happy" but the "people" insisted that they would not leave until they got the certificate.

Banda, who was flanked by her husband, retired Chief Justice Richard Banda and PP vice president Khumbo Kachali, said she owed all her life successes, including the concept of the PP and the "unwavering support" from both men and women to God, the Almighty.

The party was first officially launched on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at a glamorous event held at Nyambadwe Lions Primary School Lower Ground in Blantyre. It is being launched under the theme "Moving into the Future with Hope" and from eastern region the events move to central and northern regions on dates that are yet to be announced.

Banda was dismissed from the DPP last December for apparently for refusing to endorse Peter Mutharika to succeed his brother, President Bingu wa Mutharika after he finishes his second five-year term in 2014.
