People’s Party set for launch in Mangochi
The newly registered People's Party (PP) is set for official launch in the eastern region on Sunday, the party's publicist Stephen Mwenye has confirmed.
"The People's Party proudly announces the official launch of the party in the eastern region (province) at Mangochi district ground on Sunday, September 11, 2011," Mwenye told Nyasa Times in a telephone interview from his base, capital city, Lilongwe.
The PP national director of publicity said the official launch comes on the heels of another "successful" launch in Blantyre on August 27, 2011 at Nyambadwe Lions Primary School Lower Ground. He also says the launch in Mangochi comes after the PP made "huge impact" in the Tuesday's Rumphi Central by-elections.
"The state vice president and leader of the PP, the Right Honourable Joyce Banda, who will be the guest of honour at the event, will once again tell Malawians her plans and programmes for the country," said Mwenye.
He added that people from the eastern region and party representatives from other regions are expected to attend the function, which will start at 9 AM.
Mwenye said PP and Banda welcome both negative and positive comments on her policies and programmes, in a bid to allow the people of Malawi to fully participate in the policy and programme formulation processes.
Meanwhile, the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) top gurus are alleged to have met at Sun 'n' Sand Holiday Resort in Mangochi on Wednesday to strategize on foiling the PP launch.
According to a source at the resort, DPP national campaign director, Ken Zikhale Ng'oma, presidential aide on NGOs, Bessie Chirambo and Yunus Mussa met about 30 youths drawn from the district and gave instructions to disturb the PP event.
"They feasted and consumed alcohol like nobody's business," said a waitress, preferring anonymity.
Asked to comment on the threat of disruption, Mwenye said the party does not believe in commenting on allegations.
"If it were in the public domain; yes I could have commented," he said.
