Plot to ‘smoke out’ Bishop Zuza, priest call for prayers

Catholic priest Father Eugene Ng'oma has asked the laity at St Peters Parish in Mzuzu to pray for the safety of Bishop Joseph Zuza following his blistering attacks on President Bingu wa Mutharika few weeks ago and speculations that there is a plot to 'smoke him out'.

Sources at the Diocese told Nyasa Times that Bishop Zuza has been receiving threatening calls asking him to apologise or else he will be "smoked out".

The bishop is still being followed and his meetings monitored.  According to a secret DPP meeting, he could meet with an “accident” on the road at any time or his official residence get "petrol-bombed."

Bishop Zuza: Living dangerously

Zuza, who heads of the Catholic Church in Malawi and also Mzuzu Diocese, invoked the president's ire when he told Mutharika that he should stop gagging civil society, media and the faith community, noting that they have a role to play in safeguarding the rule of law.

Father Ng'oma, Director of the Mzuzu based Tigabane community radio, during a special announcement during the service on Sunday, appealed for special prayers to God-almighty to protect the of Catholic church in Malawi.

Ng'oma said recent developments in Malawi like the destruction of Rafik Hajat's office in Blantyre and the destruction of Reverend Sembereka's household property were cause for concern.

"There are a lot of things happening in this country at the moment and we need to pray for the bishop," Ng'oma said.

The priest reminded government that the Church has the mandate to speak on behalf of those on the margins of society,

Ruling DPP spokesman Hetherwick Ntaba, who was in the Malawi Congress Party when it hatched a plan to murder the country's Catholic bishops in 1992, could not immediately comment.
