Police in Mzuzu have arrested a 38 year old man who posed as detective Police Officer at the residence of a local businessman where they demand an amplifier and MK3,500.

Mzuzu Police Station Public Relations Officer Edward  Longwe said the suspect Blessings Shupo Longwe of Mtambo village, Traditional Authority Timbiri, Nkhata Bay district and a friend, who is still at large, went to Medosn Kazidona's house in Chiputula Township saying they were investigating an amplifier he had just bought.

The duo claimed to Kazidona that the amplifier was stolen property and they confiscated it and demanded MK3,500 to drop charges.

However, the following day Kazidona went to Chiputula Police Unit to inquire about his property and the 'Police Officers' but he discovered that he was duped.

Police later instituted investigations which led to the arrest of the suspect at Area 1B in Luwinga and the recovery of the amplifier.

Meanwhile, Police are asking the public to demand genuine identification from people who visit them or inquiring about anything from them.

"This is one of the ways we can stop such types of crimes. People should not be afraid to ask," Edward Longwe said.
