Premier Cane Spirit pumps MK3m for north football cup

Premier Cane Spirit Company based in Mzuzu based has launched the Premier Gin Constituency Champions Cup that will involve all teams in all constituencies in the northern region.

Managing director of the distilling company, Cedrick Sapuwa said during the launch of the Cup at St John of God Community Services in Mzuzu that the aim of the Cup is to complement MP's efforts in the development of football at grassroots level.

"We noted that there are many football clubs in the constituencies and we would want those teams to compete both at district and regional levels. In constituencies where there are no teams, select teams will identified," Sapuwa said.

Sapuwa then urged the Northern Region Football Committee (NRFC) to run the cup in a professional manner saying teams should win on the field of play and not boardrooms.

"We would want the matches to highlight the attributes of our products and we would also use the games to sensitise people on how to enjoy our Gin .And we will not be amused to be associated with violence or hooliganism because that will against the mission of our company," he said.

Sapuwa said the sponsorship of the Cup is company's way of appreciating the support in receives from people in the region and Mzuzu.

"Most companies either start in Lilongwe or Blantyre and then open branches here. We did the opposite. We started here and we will be expanding to Blantyre or Lilongwe in the near future," he said.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) vice president Moses Mkandawire hailed the company for the sponsorship saying it was not easy for companies to part away with money because Malawi is experiencing economic challenges.

"As FAM we don't have resources and it's impossible to develop football in this country. But from time to time we value the support we get from companies and other well wishers," Mkandawire said.

Mkandawire then urged the NRFC to ensure that they market the company's products at all matches.
