Standard Bank FAM cup format changed

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced the change of format for this year's Standard Bank FAM Cup of this year's competition.

The national showpiece will be called Standard Knockout Football Cup.

New 'swift and highly –charged' format allows only top six in the flagship TNM  Super League of last season to be in the pot for the draw and eligible candidates to compete.

Customers of the Standard Bank will be allowed to vote for four teams from any district even rural clubs which will be seeded to find the other two teams to make it up to eight to fight for home and away knockout matches.

The winners will reach in the semi-finals which will be played in one leg.

Organisers said player of the tournament and best reporter of the competition both from print and electronic will be voted by the customers of the bank.

Standard Bank customers will also choose the venue for the finals showpiece through a vote.

Voting for the teams to join the top six of the Super League will commence Wednesday September 21.

The sponsors said they will determine when they kick-off of the tournament.

Minister of Youth Development and Welfare, Symon Vuwa
Kaunda, -urged other companies to emulate Standard Bank example in taking a leading role by bankrolling football competitions.

FAM president Walter Nyamilandu said the football fraternity was delighted with the bank for coming back after last year's succeful competition.

Mighty Wanderers were the first team to win the competition followed by Silver Strikers and then Moyale Barracks.
