Suspicious fire guts Malanganga garage in Lilongwe

Malanganga garage in the capital city Lilongwe was gutted by a fire that occurred in the evening of Monday destroying vehicles and property worth millions of Kwacha.

The cause of the fire was not immediately established.

The fire Brigade from Lilongwe City Assembly struggled to put off the inferno.

The garage workshop was extensively damaged in the blaze, and two people reportedly suffered smoke inhalation.

Oweners of the garage were not immediately available to comment on the inferno and what had been lost.

The development comes at a time when police are investigation fire which razed down Blantyre flea market and Tsoka market in Lilongwe believed to be arson attacks.

It also comes at the background of an arson attack on a house belonging to Reverend McDonald Sembereka, the acting national coordinator of a group of human rights organizations, the Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC).

Sembereka’s house was petrol bombed on Saturday 10 September, by unknown arsonists. The house is located in the Balaka district, Eastern Malawi

The office belonging to the Institute for Policy Interaction (IPI) was also petrol bombed, destroying office equipment, files and computers.

Another house belonging to opposition politician Salim Bagus has also been petrol-bombed.
