Three killed in Mchinji minibus crash

An over speeding and overloaded minibus has killed three people and seriously injured three others after it overturned in Mchinji District on Tuesday morning.

Mchinji Police Spokesperson Moses Nyirenda said the accident happened at around 8.00am as it was travelling from Lilongwe to Mchinji.

He said, according to surviving passengers, the high roof minibus with registration number SA 8590 had 17 passengers instead of 16 as is required by law.

The police publicist said the minibus' tyre got burst while cruising and the driver failed to control it resulting in overturning three times.

"Some of the accident survivors told us that the driver was over speeding and after the tyre burst he failed to control the situation," said Nyirenda.

One person, a young man, died on the spot while two others were pronounced dead upon arrival at Mchinji District Hospital. All the three have not yet been identified.

The three seriously injured were taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe for advanced treatment.

The minibus was being driven by 32-year-old Andrew Tembo from Pheleni village, TA Njewa in Lilongwe and survived with just minor injuries.
