Good to have you back! I’ve self published a couple of eBooks: one a collection of short stories, and the other a short story on it’s own. All in all, I’ve had around 75 downloads, which isn’t terrible considering I’m an unknown and have done very little marketing.
My thoughts: self publishing is great if you have a book which you believe will sell, but publishers don’t. I also think self publishing works better for eBooks than for print
I’m split between the two…if I think I have something that a publisher or magazine (for short stories) will like, then I’ll take that route first. If it doesn’t work out, then self publish.
Basically, I have a ton of stories lying around that no-one is reading. It’s not about the money (there’s none of that!) but as eBooks available online, they’re at least getting some reads, which is the start to getting your name out there.
So, to conclude: self publishing can work as a career in the long run, but it’s difficult. I think a combination of both self promotion and traditional promotion will be the best, which is the route I’m taking.
