First Merchant Bank (FMB) has awarded scholarships worthy MK310,000 to two Mzuzu University needy students to cover tuition and other incidentals.
FMB Mzuzu branch manager Lemani Chisi said during the cheque presentation ceremony at Mzuni campus on Monday that FMB will support these Bachelor of Education (Humanities) students till they finish their studies.
Chisi also said FMB will continue to identify other two needy students each for support.
He said the FMB chooses students based on their behaviour, performance and whether they are really needy students.
Mzuzu University (Mzuni) Acting Vice Chancellor Doctor Orton Msiska asked the corporate world to assist Mzuni with student accommodation saying about 80 percent of the student population lives off campus.
Doctor Msiska also asked FMB to increase the number of needy students it supports. "There are many here and some end up working for the same institutions that helped them"
With funding from the World Bank, the Ministry of Education is building an 800 seater Lecture Theatre to provide more learning space at Mzuni.
Last year Mzuni enrolled the first ever large number of students over 1,000 on the assumption that the Lecture Theatre project will be completed by December 2010 but the project has stalled.
