Malawi offered India cooperation in mining sector

India on Wednesday offered cooperation in exploration and development of mines to Malawi besides help in capacity building and training facilities in the sector.

According to a statement from Indian government, the first meeting of the Indo-Malawi Joint Working Group on Mining Resources, India also stressed on long-term collaboration between the two nations.

“The Working Group discussed the issues relating to the exchange of technical information on mineral resources and mining law,” reads the statement.

The meeting was co-chaired by Malawi's Anthony Livuza, Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and India's Mines Secretary S Vijay Kumar.

Livuza welcomed the Indian Government's proposals and said that there was a lot of potential for cooperation between the Geological Surveys of both the countries, the statement said.

He said that technical and financial investment from India will strengthen the business relationship between the two countries, it added.

Both the countries agreed to hold the next meeting as early as possible. The Malawi Government also invited Indian delegation to visit Malawi.

The Joint Working Group was formed to implement a pact for mutual cooperation in mining space, signed in November 2010, between the nations during the visit of the Malawi President to India.
